Inspirational Movies That Will Channel Your Inner Zuckerberg

Are you an ambitious entrepreneur, a developer, or an inventor seeking inspiration? Here is a list of movies that might help channel your inner creator:

The Social Network

If you haven’t seen this yet, it’s a must-watch film. The much-hyped “Social Network” tells the story of the origins of Facebook. And yes, it’s a highly dramatized and Hollywoodized story of the founding of the world’s most popular, well, social network. Still, it’s a very inspiring and entertaining movie to watch. The fast-paced dialogue does somewhat represent workplace talk.

Joy

Joy is a very sentimental movie, but also a very uplifting one. Joy is based on the very real story of Joy Mangano, the inventor of Miracle Mop. The movie follows Joy from her dreary roots as a broke single mother to the matriarch of a business dynasty. The movie does not hold back on the conflicts Joy has to face as she tries to bring her ideas into reality. Anyone who has an idea they want to expand upon can relate to, and learn from, Joy’s struggles.

Wall Street

This is the notable movie that started it all. Originally released in the eighties, “Wall Street” somewhat realistically, albeit depressingly, portrays the greed and the machinations that go into running successful businesses. It’s a good movie to watch and learn how not to run a company.

Rocky

The underdog becomes the champion. Why would you not want to watch this classic and be inspired to do anything that you want to do?

Pirates of Silicon Valley

Originally released in 1999, this is the greatest tech movie that you have never heard of. The movie chronicles the early lives of Valley icons Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. It’s about the trials and tribulations, and the cutthroat world of business. Even if you haven’t heard of the movie, you may have heard this memorable quote lifted from the script: “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” The gist of the movie is that a good entrepreneur stays strong even if someone steals their ideas. It’s about being innovative to overcome the competition. Many aspiring entrepreneurs will find very useful lessons from the movie’s versions of two of history’s most iconic tech personalities.

Flash of Genius

It’s a travesty that this gem of filmmaking is not as well known as some of the other titles on this list, which is why we couldn’t find a good GIF of this one. 🙁

This movie is based on the true story of Professor Bob Kearns, whom you probably have never heard of. But you have most likely benefited from his famous invention: the windshield wiper. All the big auto companies in the 1960s installed the wiper on their vehicles, and made a killing. However, the auto giants forgot to mention that it was Professor Kearns who had actually invented the thing. Kearns didn’t get any royalties, commissions, or even recognition for his work that is a staple of all vehicles produced today. The movie teaches inventors a very important lesson in patenting their work.

Enjoy one or two of the titles mentioned over the weekend, and your tribulations will seem trivial compared some of the protagonists being portrayed.

Let the awesome come to you. Give me your email and I’ll give you all my new posts -- win, win!
